1.8/2.0L axle identification and diff rebuild

Postby Icedmunkie » Sun Oct 03, 2021 4:50 pm

Afternoon all,

I noticed that the Firenza was leaking a lot of oil from the rear end, so jacked it up today and had a look...

Noticed that the front of the diff where the prop shaft bolts onto has a lot of play, which is why the seal has gone, this now means I have a few questions:

A) How can I tell what axle it is in case the seal is unreadable for any part numbers?
B) Where can I get the required parts, I am guessing a bearing supplier will be able to get bits or are they some obsolete unique Vauxhall thing?
C) What size socket is the nut on the end I'm thinking 1" 1/4 or 1" 5/16ths?

Lastly, I am guessing I just didn't torque the nut up enough when I did it up potentially, I did make sure the tab was knocked over. I suppose I should probably get a new nut but from memory, this was a pain to find last time!

Thanks

A. I have an idea the seal is the same on all OHC axles (except HPF), and I seem to recall that Stuart Anderson at Magardsport had some at one point.

B. Bearings are tricky to find, from what I have heard. I seem to recall it was easier to find cross-references for the 052 / HPF axle than for the standard OHC axle.

C. I think it's 1 1/4", I'd have to check. I know I bought a socket for mine.

Were you ever able to check the socket size? Just thinking I still need to order one.

I finally remembered to check today, it's a 1 1/4" socket that's needed for the pinion nut.
